The Brewers of Europe
Based in Brussels, The Brewers of Europe brings together national brewers’ associations from 29 European countries and provides a voice to represent the united interests of Europe’s 7500 breweries. The Brewers of Europe promotes the positive role played by beer and the brewing sector in Europe and advocates the creation of the right conditions to allow brewers to continue to freely, cost-effectively and responsibly brew and market beer across Europe.
Beer and society
Beer is a refreshing enjoyable beverage that brings people together and delivers pleasure to the lives of many people. When consumed responsibly– as is done by the vast majority – moderate beer consumption can be fully compatible with an adult’s balanced, active lifestyle.
The Brewers priorities are:
To promote the role of beer in society and its positive contribution to the community and people’s balanced lifestyles
To further reinforce brewers’ leadership and responsibility in relation to food safety
To promote initiatives that inform consumers of the nature of beer, the effects of moderate beer consumption and the potential risks of alcohol misuse
To continue to foster multi-stakeholder partnerships and campaigns against alcohol misuse and in support of moderate and responsible beer consumption
To promote robust, credible and up-to-date self-regulatory systems governing the marketing of beer
Beer and economy
Generating around 2 million jobs in Europe and 50 billion euros in government tax revenues, the brewing sector is a major contributor to the European economy and has an important role to play in support of the EU’s goals to cut youth employment and increase growth and competitiveness.
Key issues of interest are:
To encourage fair excise systems for beer that reflect the specifics of beer and the brewing process and recognise the contribution made by beer to the wider economy
To encourage EU decision makers in the deepening of the single market, in order to eliminate distortions for companies and consumers
To foster the competitiveness of the European brewing sector and further encourage the positive contribution that European beer can make to the EU’s trade balance
Beer and the environment
Beer is closely tied to nature through the origin of its principal ingredients of water, hops and malted cereals. Brewers also take their responsibility on the environment seriously, innovating to cut water usage, reduce emissions and energy usage, reuse and recycle packaging, and minimise waste through the reuse of secondary materials.
The priorities of the Brewers:
To reinforce knowledge of the important link between, beer, agriculture and the natural environment
To show the brewers’ leadership in supporting, through constant improvements both in practice and in measurement, the EU’s drive towards sustainable consumption and production
To encourage the ongoing improvement and dissemination of best available techniques in respect of sustainability within the brewing sector
Beer and brewing
Beer has been brewed for thousands of years with a step-by-step evolution in the science and technology leading to what we recognise as beer today. The European Brewery Convention (EBC) has played its part in developing methods for modern quality control procedures in brewing, malting and hop laboratories throughout the world. All technical aspects of beer brewing knowledge and scientific research in brewing science have been corner stones of the activities of the EBC.
Commitment to knowledge creation and exchange in the fields of brewing, malting and fermentation science.
Dissemination of brewing knowledge and research via EBC events such as the biennial EBC congresses and symposia.
To maintain the output of the Analysis Committee for new and revised laboratory methods.
To support individual technical projects involving the brewing sector at EU level (example: Gushing Causative Factors joint project)
To maintain a European and global network of brewers, brewing technologists and brewing scientists and fostering cordial relationships with the American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC), the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA), the Brewery Convention of Japan (BCOJ) and the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD).
